The West Indies won the World T20, defeating England by four wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (April 3). Set a target of 156, the West Indies needed 19 runs off the last over. The West Indies became the first team to win the World T20 twice, having won it also in 2012. The West Indies also lifted the women's World T20 title earlier in the day, when it beat Australia, capping a fantastic treble in 2016, which also saw it winning the under-19 World Cup in February. 

 

A potentially momentous day for West Indian Women cricket got off to an unexpected start when their women’s team beat the highly fancied Australians by eight wickets and claim their first World Twenty20 title. A world record 120-run opening partnership between Matthews and Taylor set up the chase, which became pretty facile in the end. It was West Indies’ maiden title, dethroning three-time defending champions. The West Indies captain was named the Player of the Tournament for her 246 runs and eight wickets. But it was her younger team-mate who shone brighter at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. Matthews is just 18 years old who played for Hobart Hurricanes in the last season’s Women’s Big Bash League.
